I have approached the ergonomics of this design with a deep focus on the playing experience, from a players perspective. Having suffered for many hours playing heavy, sharp and uncomfortable bongos my goal was to try and find a cure for “Bongo Thigh”!
The primary problem when playing a long set of music is the physical weight of the instrument. So the question was; can beautiful tone be produced from a lighter structure?
As it turns out, yes it can.
At only a fraction over 2kg, SDR Triple Bongos are literally half the weight of a traditional wooden-shell, metal ring instrument. My resolve was to drastically simplify the design, add structure and remove weight.
This created some very significant benefits which I have capitalised on. These drums don’t need to be tuned so they are a complete one-piece unit and require no maintenance. The physical size of the drums was so dramatically reduced that there is space for and additional drum to be added within the standard bongo footprint.
The next issue was how incredibly uncomfortable traditional instruments are to hold between your legs for a forty-five-minute set.
These SDR Triple Bongos Fit beautifully into the bend of your inner right knee and left thigh without requiring much tension in your leg muscles. The playing edges are rounded and smoothed, making them an inviting tactile experience and very kind on your hands.
Because no tuning is required, regardless of the weather the instrument stays in tune with itself and pitch remains consistent even with considerable fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
